Muscle cramps. What are they and how can we prevent them?
This blog about muscle cramps will give you a better understanding of what muscle cramps are, common symptoms, how to treat and prevent them and when you should see a doctor.
What are muscle cramps and common symptoms related to them?
Muscle cramp is a sudden, unexpected tightening of one or more muscle which causes a sharp pain which usually only lasts several seconds or minutes. You may also experience muscle twitching, muscle hardness and muscle distortion which may recur multiple times before it goes away.

After the cramp eases, the area might be sore for hours or days. Muscle cramps occur mostly in the leg muscles, most often in the calf but can occur in any muscle in the body.
What causes muscle cramps?
Muscle cramps can have many causes. This may include overuse of the muscles, muscular tension, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, nerve compression, poor blood flow, medications, pregnancy, and medical conditions such as diabetes.
How do you treat & prevent them?
There are a few things you can do to treat muscle cramps such as stretching the affected area, light massage and applying heat or ice.
To prevent muscle cramps from happening, make sure to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, avoid too much alcohol or caffeine, ensure you get a good night's sleep, wear supportive shoes that fit well, stretch before and after exercising and get regular deep tissue massage/sports massage.
When to see a doctor about them
